While toothpaste, public drinking water, and several other items you may consume routinely contain fluoride, you might not get enough of this mineral. Despite your regular intake of fluoride, it’s important to consider receiving fluoride treatment at our office during exams.
Fluoride strengthens your teeth and helps prevent cavities. Several well-respected dental organizations, including the American Dental Association, advise you to receive a fluoride treatment at each of your preventive dental examinations. Generally, this means you should receive fluoride from your dentist once every six months.
Fluoride is a mineral necessary for your enamel to remain strong. It causes your teeth to be more resistant to acid and other material that cause decay. Your teeth lose minerals, but they’re constantly “rebuilding” themselves. They, however, require fluoride for the remineralization or “rebuilding” process.
You may refuse treatment from our dentist at EZ Dental Clinic. It’s not part of the routine. However, if you’re at risk for getting a cavity, a fluoride treatment in Houston may prevent it from forming. In some cases, if you have a new cavity forming, our dentist applies the mineral directly to it, which helps remineralize the tooth and eliminate the decay.
A fluoride treatment contains a higher concentration of fluoride than toothpaste or drinking water. Our dentist applies it via foam, varnish, or gel. Our dentist paints a varnish on your teeth. You may also receive a foam or gel in a mouth guard that you have to wear for one to four minutes.
While routine fluoride treatments and dental cleanings prevent cavities, you may take steps at home to improve your oral health. For instance, you should eat a diet without a large amount of acid or sugar. Both of these can lead to tooth decay. It’s also important for you to brush and floss your teeth regularly. At your appointment, we’ll explain other ways to keep your teeth and mouth healthy.
