Sometimes a patient’s teeth possess numerous small imperfections like uneven crowns, cracks, and discoloration. It would be expensive and time-consuming to fix each individual problem. When this is the case, a dentist might recommend dental veneers or laminates.

A dental veneer is a thin shell that is applied to the exterior surface of the teeth. Veneers were typically made of porcelain but can include a range of synthetic materials. The veneers are molded to fit onto the teeth but with a different appearance. Patients can choose how white they look if their teeth are straighter and how uniform the crowns are. The result is a healthy, beautiful smile that has extra protection from damage and decay thanks to the shell.

The Procedure

The first step to receiving treatment is to locate and schedule an appointment with a dentist who is qualified in cosmetic dentistry and making veneers. Here at the EZ Dental Clinic in Houston, our professionals have years of experience in ensuring patients get the look they desire. Once an appointment is made, the dentist identifies potential problem areas and discusses with you what you would like to change and what is possible.

The next step is taking x-rays and molds of the teeth. Each one is customized to best fit in the mouth. Afterward, the patient’s mouth is numbed, and half of a millimeter of enamel is scraped off the front surface of the affected teeth, so the veneers sit in place and don’t disrupt the equilibrium of the mouth. Another impression is taken of the tooth to mold the veneers. Sometimes temporary equipment will be given while the patient waits two to four weeks for the permanent veneers to be made.

Once the permanent veneers arrive, the dentist bonds them to the teeth. This process involves applying a special cement to the surface of the teeth and attaching each piece of the veneer carefully, so it is perfectly aligned. A certain light is then used to harden the cement, affixing the veneer to the teeth. By the end, you will have a new smile to enjoy.
